Stature was the last word

Playing warm-up Spelling games with Amanda

Central Academy

Fake check for the winner!

Nkumba's First Spelling Contest went surprisingly well. The students were very nervous so to begin things (and wait for the other schools to show up) we played spelling games. Thank you Amanda for getting them to relax enough to play Hangman!

It took about an hour to go 8 rounds of words. I've been going to these schools for a couple of months now, helping with spellling lessons, watching or organizing the schools spelling contests and it was hard to watch these finalists misspell words. I kept trying to tell them the correct spellings via ESP. It didnt work and one-by-one the contests dwindled until the best spellers (or really the students who work well under pressure) were left.

First place: Gloria from St. Charles Lwanga P/S
Second place:Penny from Nkumba P/S
Third place: Paul from African Children's Choir P/S

The first place winner received 200,000 USh (about 100$) towards her third term school tuition. Her teacher told me her family would be so proud and thankful for the help with school fees. Thank you Bishop Dunne staff for contributing to this contest! It helped motivate the students to learn English, gave them a chance to practice speaking skills and helped them gain confidence in their abilities. Thank you so much! The teachers and students who participated in the contest all send their greeting and heartfelt thanks to you.

Towards the end of our celebration lunch one of the teachers asked if i could help organize another spelling contest for the third term. Yes!

  1. what useable life skills they are learning.
    BRAVO to the students!
and BRAVO to your hard work!
    ~to work hard for something
~to have the courage to be wrong
in front of a lot of people
    ~to praise, and accept praise
~and to leave thinking "next time"
You mentioned the winner received some
money to go towards tuition, her third term tuition. Is a term the same as a quarter here? And how exciting, and such a sign of support, for the teacher to ask for another one!
mija, i am 'beaming' with joy!

  2. thinking about Nkumba's first spelling contest
made me curious about the first contest here,
    in the U.S.of A.
10 Sep 1875 was the earliest written article
i could find, but, reading it you could assume
they had been going on for a while.
    interesting~ http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=DSC18750910.2.17
it is thought the word 'bee' was used as the
singular form of the word -been- a term used in England referring to gathering to help someone complete a task.
In the late 1700's, here in the states it referred to social gatherings,
a 'spinning bee', a 'logging bee'...
The first national spelling bee was in 1925, with 9 contestants!
I look forward to Nkumba's 1st spelling contest(and maybe it will change to 'bee' once they understand it's meaning) spreading throughout Uganda!
i can hardly wait to 'bee' with you!
ripples in the water look like smiles~

just checking on your blog to see if you had checked in...i know you are probably busy with another project. i have been busy myself, feels like around the clock, with the starting of school. of course you know me well enough to not be surprised of all my planning and 'list making'in preparing for the =race= of the summer!
it feels like Bertha, Vincent and i
are in position at the starting line,
~waiting for the signal to 'take off'
    ~last student leaves...woops, false alarm.
~last teacher leaves! AND. we are off
rags, windex, paper towels, array of cleaning brushes, degreaser, dedirter, deduster...
lots of good music, sweat, laughter, sweat,
sharing of lives, sweat, proud smiles.
how could it get any better?, but it does, Stefan, Martin and PJ show up!
~all for one, one for all~
we had Andrew join us this year, he may never be the same...
    so, school starts tomorrow...
    am i ready?
    always!
    for a chance to smile
    at the world...
    missing your smile~
    con carino, be good.
